TRUDEAU’S DEAL WITH FUREY BETRAYS RECONCILIATION

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a backroom rate mitigation deal with Newfoundland and Labrador’s Premier, Andrew Furey, to protect Newfoundland ratepayers from electricity rate shock due to massive cost overruns on the Muskrat Falls project.

In doing so, Justin Trudeau chose not to protect Innu Nation’s financial benefits from the Muskrat Falls project contained in our Impacts and Benefits Agreement (IBA). Under the IBA, Nalcor Energy was supposed to pay the Innu 5% of profits from the project, which would have helped us close the socio-economic gap. It now looks like that 5% will result in $0 for the Innu, while the Province will get $5.2 billion from Canada.

IBA Revenues will help us build a proud future for our children and grandchildren. We need these revenues just as much as Newfoundlanders need to avoid a massive hike in electricity rates.

The Prime Minister neither informed us nor consulted with us before making this deal.
